Elvis Is All Snook Up In Hawaii
Planning a deep sea fishing vacation? Hawaii, located in the central Pacific, is where fishermen from all over the world settle in to tropical beach rentals and charter boats out of ports such as Waikiki and Kailua Kona to go after sailfish, mahi mahi, Pacific dolphin and more.
Fully fitted Hawaii bed breakfasts with fully equipped kitchens allow you the opportunity to prepare your catch as you like it at the end of the day unless you want to have it preserved and mounted for display. The bottom line is if you are after the big fish, the Aloha State is the place to find them.
For those on a budget, the better choice is to utilize a charter boat firm that provides shared charters. You and up to five other anglers split the fee of the boat, which saves on individual expenses considerably. One of the top charter boat companies we know of on the island of Oahu is the Maggie Joe Sport Fishing Company, which has been providing shared fishing charters and boat trips for sixty years. You won't need to bring bait, ice or tackle as this is all inclusive in their rate but you will have to take your own food and drink for the day.
Oahu is of course not the only island in Hawaii. Kauai, the Garden Isle, is not only home to a few of the most wondrous exotic surroundings in the state and has been the setting of many films and TV shows, including the pilot episode of Gilligan's Island, but also offers much more than fishing. Hiking, helicopter tours, inner tubing and surfing are all popular pastimes on what many consider Hawaii's most lovely island. In addition to economical deep sea fishing charters out of Kapaa there is also a great many opportunities for freshwater fly fishermen as well. In the midst of nine rivers and over 160 small lakes and reservoirs, fly fishermen will find several species at the end of their lines.
The port town of Lahaina on Maui was a whaling seat in the 19th Century, but is currently home to whale-watching tours as well as boat tours and fishing excursions. Take a cruise on the Start Me Up or one of the other charter boats in town throughout the winter months and odds are good that you will see ardent humpback whales as they do what mammals usually do during the breeding season. Lahaina also has terrific beach rental accommodations accessible throughout the year.
Finally, there's the Big Island. The abundant deep sea fishing grounds are close in so you won't have to go more than four miles off the coast before encountering 500-lb. sailfish and yellowfin. Kailua-Kona is the home town port of the Sea Wife, a 38-footer with area for eighteen guests, making it the largest such boat in the state. Beyond the private resorts, beach rentals are reasonably priced.
