Essential Carp Fishing Gear - The Carp Rig
The carp rig is designed to position the hook away from the bait to improve the chances of hooking the fish. Instead of the bait being on the hook, it is placed above it, so that the carp takes the bait first and the hook follows. This allows the bait to pass through the throat of the carp before the carp knows that there is a hard hook attached. The carp rigs have been used across Europe for quite a while now; recently they have become more popular in North America.
Carp rigs are a new concept to many fisherman, but with the proven results the rigs are popular and rightly so. The concept is a simple one, carp move the bait through their mouth and the rig allows them the chance to feed before hooking them. Carp rigs were invented because the carp would nibble on the bait and feeling the hard metal hook, would reject the bait resulting in few carp caught.
The methods of carp fishing have revolutionized throughout the years, and will only continue to do so. Developing clever hook arrangements designed to trick the carp are developed frequently. You will find yourself catching more carp the more you learn about the different rigs and their uses. Simply put, if the fish can't see your rig, the easier it will be to catch them. The object is to conceal your rig in the best possible way. Fish are actually quite smart and can sense things in their environment better then we believe.
Just because you caught a great size carp in one place using a certain rig does not mean that the same rig will work in a different area. More than likely, the opposite will happen. Adapt your rig to the fishing location and changes in feeding. You will probably find that changing your rigs often will be best. While it may seem obvious, don’t forget to keep your rig color the same as the color of the lakebed; drawing attention to the hook is the last thing you need to do.
Your goal is to trick the carp so you must stay on alert the entire time. If you fail to catch a carp it is because the fish is smarter then you have given them credit for. Whether you are a beginner angler or have been doing this for years, there are always new rigs and methods to try and always some new bit of carp fishing gear to add to your collection.
