Shimano Sustain FE Review

The definition of "sustain" is: to maintain or prolong, keep up vitality or strength. Is the new Sustain FE the tough cookie that the name implies? By all reports the verdict is yes! Due to fine tolerances in manufacture, the use of high grade materials, and very good design, this Shimano reel is built to last. It is equally at home in either salt or fresh water.

One of the nice reports regarding the Shimano Sustain FE is that it will stand up to heavy usage. The reel has amazing smoothness without compromising on power. And the power is delivered from a relatively lightweight package featuring aluminum and graphite construction. The aluminum spool has a special titanium lip that allows the line to slip off effortlessly making casting silky smooth. The special coating also protects the spool lip from nicks and scratches. In addition you get the all-new Paladin gear durability enhancement . Also featured is the Aero Wrap II, Oscillation Worm Gear, shielded A-RB bearings, Machined-aluminum direct drive handle, Floating Shaft, Super Stopper waterproof drag, and a Sealed maintenance port.

Of course the real test is to go out fishing and experience what the Shimano Sustain has to offer first hand. The line slips off the reel so effortlessly that you get greater distance than from lesser reels. Recovery action of the reel is also smooth and makes you feel like you are handling one of the best fishing reels on the market. Shimano has done a good job on the winding technology that stacks the line back on the reel perfectly. This has a flow on benefit to give the smoothest possible release of the line when casting. There is no lack of power in the reel either despite its comparatively small size. Not even a large fish making a strong run can upset the drag system. With 25 lbs of drag on the Shimano FE 5000 there is plenty of pressure and a nice smooth action. The operation of the drag is very smooth and powerful. The strength of the handle and direct gear connection means you can give it heaps and crank the line in. Any runs the fish makes are soon sorted by the brakes that allow controlled slippage without shuddering.
